As mandated by the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA), the Financing for Development (FfD) Follow-up is an intergovernmental process that reviews the financing for development outcomes and the means of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Forum results in agreed conclusions and recommendations that are submitted to the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. The 2017 Forum outcome provides a comprehensive assessment of the current global context, progress made and challenges faced since the adoption of the AAAA and necessary actions to accelerate progress for the achievement of sustainable development for all.

On the margins of the 2017 FfD Forum, the Permanent Mission of Ecuador and UN Women organized a side event "Transformative Financing for Gender Equality: Driving the Agenda Forward," bringing together high-level Member State representatives to build political support for increased financing for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The event featured interventions from Ecuador, the European Union, Costa Rica, Canada and South Africa and UN-Women. Panelists emphasized the importance of robust financing for the full and effective implementation of gender equality commitments. They recognized the underinvestment in gender equality and highlighted efforts within their respective countries and globally to close resource gaps. These efforts include the adoption and implementation of gender responsive policies and legislation, design and implementation of gender responsive planning and budgeting systems, generation of high-quality data and the documentation of promising practice on financing gender equality. The event closed with a call to strengthen the movement for transformative financing for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
