17 July 2019 – On the margins of the 2019 High-Level Political Forum, UN Women convened an interactive dialogue on gender responsive budgeting with ministers from Rwanda, Sweden and Serbia. The dialogue provided an opportunity for Member States to critically reflect on their progress and learn from other countries. Zohra Khan, UN Women’s Policy Advisor, shared experience from supporting gender responsive budgeting in more than 80 countries. The discussion addressed the importance of political leadership, technical know-how and the need for a whole of government approach. The speakers noted that gender responsive budgeting requires an investment of time and resources and is not a quick-fix. Ultimately it strengthens government systems and institutions and contributes to transformative change for women and girls. The dialogue closed with a call by UN Women for all countries to adopt gender responsive budgets by 2030.
